Poem 5

                                                                         Nine Gold Medals

The athletes had come from all over the country 

To run for the gold, for the silver, and bronze

Many weeks and months of training

All coming down to these games.

देश भर से एथलीट स्वर्ण, 

रजत और कांस्य पदक के लिए दौड़ लगाने आए थे।

कई हफ्तों और महीनों का प्रशिक्षणसब कुछ इन्हीं खेलों पर निर्भर था।

The spectators gathered around the old field 

To cheer on all the young women and men 

The final event of the day was approaching 

Excitement was high to begin.

दर्शक पुराने मैदान के चारों ओर जमा हो गए थे, 

सभी युवा महिलाओं और पुरुषों का उत्साहवर्धन करने के लिए। 

दिन का अंतिम कार्यक्रम नजदीक आ रहा था। शुरुआत में उत्साह चरम पर था।

The blocks were all lined up for those who would use them 

The hundred-yard dash and the race to be run 

These were nine resolved athletes in the back of the starting line 

Poised for the sound of the gun.

उन लोगों के लिए सभी ब्लॉक कतार में लगे हुए थे 

जो उनका उपयोग करेंगे।

सौ गजकी दौड़ और होनेवाली रेस : शुरुआती लाइन के पीछे 

नौ दृढ़निश्चयी एथलीट बंदूक की आवाज का इंतजार कर रहे थे।

The signal was given, the pistol exploded 

And so did the runners all charging ahead 

But the smallest among them, he stumbled and staggered 

And fell to the asphalt instead.

इशारा दिया गया, पिस्तौल फट गई और 

सभी धावक आगे की ओर दौड़ पड़े लेकिन 

उनमें से सबसे छोटा लड़खड़ा गया और 

इसके बजाय वह डामर पर गिर पड़ा।

He gave out a cry of frustration and anguish 

His dreams and his efforts dashed in the dirt 

But as sure as I’m standing here telling this story 

The same goes for what next occurred.

उसने हताशा और पीड़ा से चीख मारी।

उसके सपने और उसके प्रयास चकनाचूर हो गए। 

लेकिन जिस प्रकार मैं यहाँ खड़े होकर यह कहानी सुना रहा हूँ, 

उसी प्रकार आगे जो हुआ वह भी सच साबित हुआ।

The eight other runners pulled up on their heels

The ones who had trained for so long to compete 

One by one they all turned round and went back to help him

And brought the young boy to his feet.

बाकी आठ धावक भी उनके पीछे-पीछे आ गए।

ये वे धावक थे जिन्होंने प्रतियोगितामें भाग लेने के लिए इतने लंबे समय तक प्रशिक्षण लिया था।

वे सब एक-एक कर के मुड़े और उसकी मदद करने के लिए वापस चले गए।

और उसने उस लड़के को खड़ा कर दिया।

Then all the nine runners joined hands and continued

The hundred-yard dash now reduced to a walk 

And a banner above that said (Special Olympics)

Could not have been more on the mark.

फिर सभी नौ धावकोंने हाथ मिलाए और आगे बढ़ते रहे।

सौ गज की दौड़ अब पैदल चलने में बदल गई 

और उसके ऊपर एक बैनर पर लिखा था (स्पेशल ओलंपिक्स)

इस से बेहतर अनुमान नहीं हो सकता था।

That’s how the race ended, with nine gold medals

They came to the finish line holding hands still 

And a standing ovation and nine beaming faces 

Said more than these words ever will.

इस तरह दौड़ का अंत हुआ, नौ स्वर्ण पदकों के साथ। वे

हाथ थामे हुए फिनिश लाइन तक पहुंचे। 

और खड़े होकर तालियां बजाई गईं और 

नौ मुस्कुराते चेहरों ने इन शब्दों से कहीं अधिक कहा।
